Prototyping in Code //DESIGN 499
Leisa Reichelt, Anna Debenham, and Peter Gasston
Thursday, June 28th from 9:00 am - 6:00 pm. (optional)
Friday, June 29th to Sunday, June 30th from 9:00 am - 6:00 pm.
Join in on an intensive weekend long workshop aimed at giving designers, UX Professionals, and aspiring coders the skills needed to start building their designs with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Students will spend the majority of the time with their hands dirty, working at their own pace on projects of increasing complexity. We have a group of experienced instructors who will be on call to get you started and then support your learning as you tackle the projects and learn by doing. The instructor to participant ratio will be high, ensuring that you’ll get the one-on-one attention you need to start prototyping your designs in code.
Thursday: Code Fitness for Beginners (optional) If you don’t know your HTML from your JavaScript, then you’re going to have to work a bit harder than others to get up to speed with prototyping. The optional day one is dedicated to teaching you what you’ll need to know about HTML, CSS and JavaScript in order to make the most of the bootcamp.
Friday and Saturday: Prototyping in Code We'll teach you to go from design to code and work out how to turn a photoshop file into HTML and CSS. You'll learn topics like, advanced html and forms, jQuery and jQuery UI, and how to use frameworks for rapid development. All lessons are wrapped up in practical, hands on, development projects and students are encouraged to bring their own projects to work on.
About the Instructors
Leisa Reichelt is a freelance user experience (UX) consultant based in London. She works with start ups, open source communities and companies on implementing Agile UX. She has co-founded many organizations to support the development of the UX community including, The UX Bootcamp, UX Bookclub and UX Tuesday. She is also, literally, writing the book on strategic UX.
Anna Debenham is a well known freelance front end developer who works with some of the top UK agencies but has also devoted a lot of her time to teaching young people how to code. Anna works with the Mozilla Hackasaurus program as Event and Curriculum Manager, helping create tools that help young people tinker with the building blocks of the web. Anna also launched ‘Scrunch Up’ - an online magazine for young designers and developers that publishes articles, interviews and tutorials to help young people get a good grounding in the web industry.
Peter Gasston is currently working as a developer at London start up Top10. He has literally written the book on CSS3, writes at Broken Links, is a passionate advocate of Web Standards, and has over 10yrs experience working on award winning digital products as both front end developer and UX lead in both agency and corporate environments.
----------
A great way to get started on the coding trail or ignite an extinguished flame that may have once burned. I’ve been on course’s where I feel I’ve gained very little but loved UXbootcamp, real sense of achievement from doing this.
- Rob Sterry, UX Consultant, Aviva
UX Bootcamp provided a distraction-free environment for experimentation and learning together with like-minded people. The expert trainers were always around and happy to help, no matter how trivial or complicated my questions were.
- Alexander Baxevanis, Senior UX consultant, Webcredible
UX Bootcamp was an excellent opportunity for UXers/designers in a number of different roles and companies, to come together and learn valuable skills that they would otherwise not have the time (and access to experts) to do so. The instructors were highly knowledgeable and approachable, and the course was structured in such a way that it allowed for us to achieve a lot in a small amount of time.
- Jamie Brooker, Co-Founder, We Are Human
Possibly the most enjoyable course I’ve been on. If it’s the sort of thing you’re into, then it’s a great chance to meet like minded folks and really get your hands dirty.
- Lucy Spence, LOVEFiLM
I really enjoyed UX Bootcamp. The instructors were excellent and the material we covered was top notch. I would definitely be up for attending another one in the near future and I highly recommend it. Excellent group of people to learn with also. Cheers to all those involved.
- Daniel Beere, Digital Media Design Student
Getting to learn the nuances of code from experienced professionals was much more effective than learning from some online tutorial. Of course, meeting and socializing with other UX professionals makes it even better.
-Brian Pagán, User Experience Consultant; User Intelligence Amsterdam
